Lately I’ve had a lot of people inquiring as to how they can improve their digestion and reduce bloating. One of my favourite tools in my kitchen are spice blends that work for exactly this purpose. Here is one of my favourites: belly masala!
- 1/4 cup Coriander seed
- 2 tbsp Black peppercorn*
- 2 tbsp Cloves*
- 2 tbsp Fenugreek*
- 1/4 cup Fennel
- 1/4 cup Cumin seed
- 1 stick (4 inch) Cinnamon*
- 2 tbsp Turmeric (dried)
- 2 tbsp Cardamom pods
- 1 tbsp mustard seed*
*According to Ayurveda, these spices are classified as stimulants, which act to increase internal heat, support digestion, and strengthen metabolism.
Heat over medium heat until the seeds are fragrant. Allow it to cool before you grind it. I prefer to hand grind with a mortar and pestle, however a small electric grinder will also do the trick. This is for a small batch, as I believe fresh ground spices are the way to go. BE WITH THIS PROCESS. Choose high quality, organic seeds; check them out, look at them closely, feel their texture; take in the aroma while it heats up (and right after grinding, OMG).
Use this blend by adding a bit to dressings, soups, curries, or anything that requires some seasoning. When I use it in a curry/gravy, I typically add a bit initially and then again near the end.
